Home Makeover 2014 – Living Room and Dining Room

No sooner had we make a to-do list of house projects for this spring, than my Dad was front and centre with his rollers and brushes. Thanks to his hard work, our living room, dining room, and hallway now have a fresh coat of paint.

This is a project I’ve wanted to tackle for years, but never found the time. They were the last walls that still had the neutral beige that the entire main floor (except the kitchen) had been painted by the previous owners.

As usual I didn’t take any real before photos, but here’s one I took when we replaced our sofa back in the fall.

The living room colour is Benjamin Moore’s Misted Fern, while the hallway colour, which includes the front entrance and continues on to the bedrooms, is called Wild Mushroom.

The green is much bolder than what we had before. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, but I couldn’t be more pleased. With winter still ragging on outside, it almost feels like spring in here.

We’d bought a brown leather sofa last year when I finally got fed up with cleaning cat hair off our microfiber furniture. Since then, I’d been searching for a chair, although I wasn’t really even sure what I was even looking for.

On a whim, we just bought a blue wingback chair from Ikea. We’d also like to replace that side table, but like the chair, we’re not really sure where to begin.

What’s missing from this space right now is our sideboard. It’s been moved to the garage and waiting for a warm day when I can sand and strip it. It was a thrift shop score that’s always needed some work, so it will be getting it’s own facelift soon.

Finally, I found a wire stand for my record player. I’d been looking for one for ages but just couldn’t find one in decent condition for a price I was willing to pay. This one was only $15 at the Freelton Antique Mall and although it was covered in rust, it cleaned up nicely with some steel wool and a wire brush.

It’s not perfect, but better than when we brought it home. I may do some more research about rust removal and take another stab at it another time. It’s good enough for now though.

We’ve since moved on to the main floor bathroom, but we still have some more work to do before the project is complete.

Stay tuned.
