Ok, Let’s Try This Again

Last year, in an attempt to rectify a misguided dress purchase, I dyed this white dress, orange (as documented here). I’d been unsure about this bold colour decision though. While it was a lovely shade of orange, it was really, really bright.

A year later, I still hadn’t worn it. Every time I put it on, I couldn’t shake the giant traffic cone feeling. Really, the only accessory I could imagine pairing with this outfit was a 6 foot pole topped with a reversible stop/slow sign.

So, back into the dye bath it went. This time I went with a wine colour. This is not only more subdued but also practical, as red wine is the third most common liquid I spill on myself, coming in behind coffee and hot sauce.

I’m really digging the colour, but I’m not entirely happy about how it turned out overall. This time around, the stitching detail didn’t quite stain evenly and there’s a few light spots (although they’re hardly noticeable). I also overlooked the fact that this dress has a white zipper. In retrospect, that’s probably why I didn’t choose such a dark shade the first time around. Most of the zipper is hidden, but the pull really stands out. Other than painting it somehow, I’m not sure how to hide it.

Considering this dress only cost about $15.00, I’m starting to think this dress has become far more trouble than it’s worth!

omgosh this dress is driving you crazy!
I really liked the orange but I’m sure it was super bright in real life.

The wine is great. You could just put on a cardigan with it and that would solve the zipper pull issue easily – or tape around and paint.

The wine color is definitely more wearable though! That shape looks great on you!

Now that you mention it, I will be wearing a cardigan with this dress most of the time. My office is always freezing.

i LOVE the orange… AND the wine colour too!… i like how the trim and stiching didn’t dye and for that reason I think it’s totally fine for the zipper to remain white. I will have to examine my closet for clothes to re-design! thanks for the inspiration!

Okay – first thing first. How did the white stitching stay white???

I love the orange – but I hear you on the traffic cone synopsis. You are too funny – I would never have thought that until you mentioned it. But the wine color – love, love, love it. If this dress disappears from your closet, I admit it – it was me.

The stitching is polyester, do the dye doesn’t take. The rest is cotton.
