Things I’ve Bought Lately – Spring Thrifting

I fell out of the habit of writing my shopping confessionals back in the fall. It was around this time I became consumed with job interviews, craft shows, and holiday related activities. Now that life has returned to a new normal, I’m ready to start sharing again.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been stopping by the thrift stores, picking up some new things for spring.

Here are a few items I’ve bought for the upcoming season:

Bensimon Sneakers
They’re so, so comfortable. They’ll be great for schlepping around this summer.

Banana Republic Tank
I’d meant to buy this last year, but my size sold out before it went on clearance (the only time I buy things at BR). I was so happy to find it this year, with the store tags still attached, at Goodwill. Score!

Esprit Straw Cloche
I love a good chapeau, but I always found it hard to find nice summer hats.

Speaking of cloches, have you seen Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries yet? It’s an Australian show that’s just airing this year. It’s set in the 1920s, and its worth watching for the beautiful period costumes alone.

Joe Fresh Dress

I’ve been leary of Joe Fresh dresses since last summer. In August, I experienced a public wardrobe malfunction in my polka dot sundress, while having dinner with friends.

On the way to the restaurant, the back zipper came unzipped, never to zip up again, exposing my tragically unsexy underthings to our fellow diners. It was like dining in a pretty hospital gown – not very dignified at all.

For that reason, I hesitated before buying this shift.

I’ll just have to remember to stock my purse with safety pins when I wear it. Just in case.

  1. OMG what on earth happened with that zipper? That’s ridiculous! Your new JF dress is super cute! I wish we could get that store in the states!
I LOVE finding BR stuff at the thrift store! I scored a like new pair of $90 pants there for like $4, and a shirt for David.

    Cute hat!

  2. Congrats on your new job! I’ve been hitting up the thrift stores myself. I’m always surprised by what people are willing to part with. Take for instance two weeks ago. I went to a Goodwill store and walked out with a Jacob corduroy(sp?) skirt and a white dressy Jessica t-shirt for get this: $5 with tax. If it lasts only one season, I won’t be disappointed. For summer stuff, it’s a good place to at least check out. 🙂

  3. Thanks Lara!

I have no idea what happened with that dress. It just came undone from the bottom and then the teeth wouldn’t align. I’ve never seen anything like it. So humiliating though, it was a really busy restaurant!

The great thing about Banana Republic stuff is that it’s actually good quality (usually), so when you find it at thrift stores it’s still in good condition.

They just opened a Joe Fresh in NYC – the first location in the US. If it gains popularity I am sure they’ll open more stores in the states.

  4. Thanks Regan! $5.00 for eveything? That’s awesome! It really is amazing some of the stuff that ends up at the thrift store. I am always surprised at how many things I find with original store tags still attached too.
