I’ve read a few books so far this summer but I’ve fallen a bit behind with my blogging on the subject. I have some catching up to do so I’ll get started with the one I’d most recommend for summer reading. Vows, Vendettas and a Little Black Dress became available at the beginning of June and had been my most anticipated book of the year.
A few years ago I found myself in the midst of my late-winter funk and longing for something fun to read. I was looking for something light and easy – some chick-lit with a bit of mystery. I wanted something like Janet Evanavich, meets Sue Grafton, with a dash of Marian Keys. I wanted all of my guilty pleasures rolled into one book. I don’t recall what combination of words I Googled but somehow my search lead me to Kyra Davis. She was exactly the kind of author I was looking for. At the time she had only three books in her Sophie Katz series. I bought them all and read them within a week. I could not put them down.
This is the fifth book in the series and although it wasn’t my favourite among the five (that would be Lust, Loathing and a Little Lip Gloss), it was thoroughly enjoyable and just like the others, I couldn’t tear myself away from it. Set in San Francisco, the heroine named Sophie Katz, is a mystery writer, who often finds herself involved in real life crime. To the chagrin of her private detective boyfriend and the local police, her curiosity often gets her in trouble as she meddles their investigations. With the support of her unique group of friends, she always gets to the bottom of things.
My synopsis makes the series seem a bit cliché. I know it sounds like every other book in this genre but Kyra Davis’ books are truly a cut above the rest. This series is both fun and well written with engaging stories and characters. I can’t wait to read about Sophie’s next adventure.
